Who are We?
The Division of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) is the largest division on campus, consisting of the departments of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics and Computer Science, and the Dual Degree Engineering Program. It offers many programs of study, research opportunities, professional training and service-learning activities, and provides a pathway for students towards successful scientific and health-profession careers (in medicine, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science, physics, biochemistry, and chemistry). With over 50 faculty members and 700 students, MAPS students can always count on faculty and peer mentoring and support. All departments in the Division are located in close proximity in the Norman C. Francis Science Building, providing the faculty, staff, and students many opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations and interactions.
The Division is committed to providing students with a high-quality education that prepares them for success in their chosen careers. The Division's faculty are world-renowned experts in their fields, and they are dedicated to teaching and mentoring students. The Division also offers a variety of research opportunities, which allow students to gain hands-on experience in their chosen field. In addition, the Division offers a variety of professional training and service-learning activities, which help students develop the skills they need to be successful in their careers.
New Orleans – For 90 years, Xavier University of Louisiana’s resilient opera program has stood as a pillar against disparity in the arts. Established only nine years after the founding of the university it calls home, the program began in 1943 and was founded during a time when Jim Crow-related exclusion of African-descended communities from the arts was common. Since its inception, the Xavier opera program has significantly impacted New Orleans culture by producing fully staged grand operas with a full orchestra and an all-Black, majority-student cast for integrated audiences. Now, as Xavier prepares to celebrate 100 years of service, the Xavier Opera Workshop is proud to announce its spring production, “The Pirates of Portsmouth.” The comic opera will be presented fully staged on Thursday, April 18th and Friday, April 19th, at 7 p.m. in the university’s historic Administration Auditorium.

For nearly 100 years, Xavier University of Louisiana’s College of Pharmacy has remained true to its goal of eliminating health disparities. For the last 17 years, the College of Pharmacy has hosted its Health Disparities Conference to addresses community engagement, policy, practice, education workforce, and science in the hopes of promoting and achieving health equity. This year, the 17th Health Disparities Conference will be held from April 7 - 9th at the Sheraton New Orleans. Themed “Social Detriments to Health: Reaching Equity – Let’s Talk Solutions,” the in-person conference promises to provide attendees with a multi-perspective view of concerns and issues related to health disparities and health equity while highlighting solutions that use public health approaches to achieve health equity.

As Xavier University of Louisiana embarks upon its centennial, its powerful legacy becomes a much bolder vision. Give.Love.Xavier aids the nation’s only historically Black and Catholic university in meeting its current and most pressing needs associated with providing need-based financial assistance for students, developing innovative programs, improving learning technology and software, offering food security to the campus community, and elevating campus wellness and infrastructure. Last year, these efforts brought in nearly $1 million.
